This is because you either have to magnify your subject, which forces you to focus on tiny details that you would otherwise “suggest” in your sketch. I mostly draw on an A3 sheet, which for me is the perfect middle ground.Īs soon as I tried drawing on an A2, it became a week-long project.
A larger canvas will allow you to work on the finer details without having the pencil marks bleed on one another. This probably won’t be an option for you if you’re going for a realistic look. The only reason you’d look at altering the size is if the canvas is too big for what you need to achieve. Unless you’re willing to compromise on the size of your drawing, I wouldn’t change this.
